Reader’s Question:
I have a teenage son (19 years old) who is currently under my auto insurance. I insure 2 cars, mine and his. I transferred title of one vehicle to him and he has moved out of the house and is no longer living here in Victoria, Texas. My insurance company told me that it is in the law that before I take my son off my insurance policy he must show proof of new auto insurance. I was told from another company that that is not true. I just need proof of his new address or proof the vehicle title is in his name. I do not want responsibility for him driving now that he is move out and the vehicle is in his name already.

The rules and guidelines of how to take a driver off of your insurance policy is normally is up to each individual insurance carrier. The reason an insurance company is so concerned about you showing proof that your son now has his own insurance policy is because they may still be liable for damages if the motorist is in fact still part of your household and is driving the vehicle without having another insurance policy on it.
State laws vary so the best way to check for sure if your insurance provider needs by law proof of your son’s new insurance coverages, or if instead it is their own insurer’s guidelines requiring this in order to take your son off of the insurance policy, is to contact your state’s insurance regulator in Victoria Texas.
