Hello there. I’m Donny, and I only have a learner’s permit. Question: can I get auto insurance here in Houston, TX, even if I don’t have my driver’s license yet?

Hi, Donny of Houston, TX. A learner’s permit is still a driving permit. Meaning, you are still allowed to drive a car but with additional restrictions imposed. According to the rule, you may only be allowed to drive a car if accompanied by a licensed driver, but the fact remains that you are still on the road, driving a car. A driver with a learner’s permit would still need protection as much as a person with a driver’s license. Logically speaking, beginner drivers pose a bigger risk to the car, to himself or herself, and the surrounding than an experienced driver, so, in effect, a driver with a learner’s permit has a greater need to have auto insurance than a licensed driver. Both a learner’s permit and a driver’s license give someone the right to drive a car in Houston, TX, or in any other state. With it comes the risk associated with driving a motor vehicle, and the given trust that motorists will drive responsibly. But just to be on the safe side, anybody who can and is permitted to drive should have auto insurance. It’s actually not a choice, it’s a must.
Drive responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.
