Double SR22 filing

Reader question:

I have to do SR22 filing in Dallas and the car insurance company that I’ve been with for years doesn’t do SR22 filing policies. Can I keep my policy with them and then get an SR22 car insurance policy with another company?

Brook

Great question, Brook.

Unfortunately, that is not an option. You see, SR22 filing doesn’t mean that you’re getting this whole new type of insurance. There is actually no new change to your coverage, the only change is the larger penalty you will be hit with if you allow that coverage to lap. While it is possible to keep your auto insurance with one company while doing an SR22 filing with another, it does not make a lot of sense. You would basically be paying for two car insurance policies. If you want to get cheap SR22 filing, then that is the wrong road to go down.

It can be frustrating to lose your history with a certain car insurance company since you have been a policy holder with them so long. They might be a company that you really like and you might get certain benefits for being a long time customer. However, if you shop around thoroughly enough you can find another company that is just as good. The only way that you should consider holding two policies at once is if you have plenty of money to dispose of.

Cheers,
