Can You Cancel Your Car Insurance Policy Without Being Charged?
Reader’s Question:
Will Texas car insurance companies charge you if you decide to cancel your insurance?
Rey
Arlington TX
Insurance companies in Texas need to protect their business from uncertainties by including clauses in policies that deal with cancellations. Most car insurance companies will impose a charge if you cancel before the maturity date. The amount will vary depending on the insurer. If you have no urgent reason, do not change car insurance companies because that could cause you to unnecessarily incur fees.
If changing policies can wait, then wait and don’t be hasty since the new offer may not turn out as well as you expected. In the event that you are canceling your insurance because you are dissatisfied with the company’s services, make sure to tell them of your intention through a written notice. The company will likely renew your insurance if you don’t make it clear to them that you don’t need their services anymore. Also, car insurance companies can report you to the Department of Motor Vehicles if your insurance lapses and you are in a probationary period because of a major violation like driving under the influence or driving while drunk. Coordinate with your old insurer properly to avoid having to explain to the DMV, suffer an additional period of probation, or worse, a cancellation or suspension of your license.
Cheap Houston Car Insurance For Your New Car
Reader’s Question:
We are getting a new vehicle. What should we do in order to save on our car insurance? Thank you.
Maricel
Houston, TX
Contact first your current Houston Texas car insurance provider and ask if they are giving you discounts if you renew your car insurance policy with them. Normally, it is cheaper to just get a new car insurance policy than renew your current insurance coverage. However certain Houston Texas car insurance companies offer discounts to entice their policy holders to renew their policies with them.
If there are no discounts in the offing, then shop for a new Houston Texas car insurance company that can provide you with cheaper rates. You can ask the insurance company holding your life and health insurance policies and ask if they can give you discounts once you get a vehicle insurance from them.
Shop around the Internet and compare rates and features of Houston car insurance companies. There are plenty of websites offering car insurance rates and the best part about it is that you can compare car insurance company rates within minutes. Once you picked the company offering the cheapest rate, call them up and inquire about the requirements you have to pass as well as the terms and conditions of the vehicle insurance policy you are interested in buying.
Do You Need Cheap Young Driver SR22 Insurance Filing?
Reader question:
I’m twenty four and have to do SR-22 filing on my car insurance. How do I manage this without paying too much?
Abby
Thank you for your question, Abby.
One good step towards getting a cheaper price for your SR-22 filing is modifying the car you drive to fit the needs of your car insurance company. There is a certain kind of car that is ideal to car insurance companies. It is a safe car that is medium sized and a few years old. Avoid large vehicles such as SUVs, which may be safe for you but cause a lot of damage–and the one thing that you really want to minimize in your car insurance company’s eyes if you have a DUI conviction is the damage that you could possibly cause to other people.
It also might be a good idea to stick to being on your parent’s car insurance policy. While this might not be an attractive decision for you as someone who is probably fully out on her own at the age of twenty four, the more people you have on a policy the cheaper a price you have to pay for your premium. So long as you paid your end of the bill, your being on it wouldn’t do them any harm.

How Do I File an SR22 in Dallas?
Reader question:
I have to do SR22 filing in Dallas and the car insurance company that I’ve been with for years doesn’t do SR22 filing policies. Can I keep my policy with them and then get an SR22 car insurance policy with another company?
Brook
Great question, Brook.
Unfortunately, that is not an option. You see, SR22 filing doesn’t mean that you’re getting this whole new type of insurance. There is actually no new change to your coverage, the only change is the larger penalty you will be hit with if you allow that coverage to lap. While it is possible to keep your auto insurance with one company while doing an SR22 filing with another, it does not make a lot of sense. You would basically be paying for two car insurance policies. If you want to get cheap SR22 filing, then that is the wrong road to go down.
It can be frustrating to lose your history with a certain car insurance company since you have been a policy holder with them so long. They might be a company that you really like and you might get certain benefits for being a long time customer. However, if you shop around thoroughly enough you can find another company that is just as good. The only way that you should consider holding two policies at once is if you have plenty of money to dispose of.

Is It Cheaper to File SR22 as Married Person?
Reader question:
Is it cheaper to do SR22 filing when you’re married?
Ramone
Thanks for asking.
That all depends on who you are married to. It is usually the case that married couples pay less for car insurance than do non married couples, and this is also true when SR22 filing is involved. The main reason for this is that being married is seen as being responsible and married people file fewer claims than unmarried people, so car insurance companies charge them less. It also tends to be because when you get married, you join together your car insurance policy, and so you go from a one name one car policy to a multiple policy, which tend to cost less. In a marriage, the person that usually benefits the most from lower car insurance rates is the male, because guys tend to pay more for their car insurance, an amount which is tempered when married.
However, this does not always apply. It is much the same when you have great credit and you marry someone with terrible credit, and then you try to apply for a house together. You might have less luck than if you had applied alone. It goes the same way if you marry and join car insurance policies with someone who has a very bad driving record. If your spouse has a good driving record, then you might benefit from that some by having to pay less for your SR22 filing. However, if your spouse has a bad driving record, then it will just cost more.

Where Should You Buy SR22 Auto Insurance Online?
Reader question:
Can I buy SR-22 auto insurance online?
Michael
That’s a really good question, Michael.
The entire car insurance industry has been moving most of its dealings over onto the internet. While many people still do it the traditional way, and drive their car up to the auto insurance agent’s office to take out a car insurance policy and fill out forms, many many more have realized that it just takes so much less time to do things online, and companies are making this more and more possible. Services are cheaper to offer online, and this is why a lot of online customers end up getting special discounts that regular office customers would not receive. This is extremely important, especially for someone like you who is already having to pay the higher than standard price for SR-22 auto insurance.
You definitely are able to buy an SR-22 car insurance policy over the internet, and it can actually be a much less exhausting experience, too. You can easily search to find out the many different companies that cater more specifically towards customers who need SR-22 auto insurance. One such company is The General, an auto insurance provider which has been in business many years and offers special low rates for customers who need cheap SR-22 auto insurance in Texas and around the country.

San Antonio SR22 Car Insurance – Great Free Rate Quotes
Reader question:
I need San Antonio SR22 car insurance and I don’t even have a car! What gives? I thought car insurance was attached to the car?
Gloria
Normally, it is.
When you have a regular insurance policy, your car insurance coverage goes with the car that you have listed on the policy. Most of the time, it does not touch any other car that you drive that is not listed on the policy, although there are instances in which your car insurance covers you regardless of which car you drive (such as rental car insurance coverage). This is the reason that, if you have car insurance for your car, you can allow other people to drive it even if they are not listed names on your car insurance policy, because they will still be covered by your own car insurance since the policy goes with the car. However, this rule does not always apply, especially when it comes to proof of insurance filing like the SR22 form.
San Antonio car insurance law requires you to file an SR22 form whether you have your own vehicle or not, so long as you have your driver’s license reinstated. For one thing, SR22 insurance puts you in a higher risk category which means you will have to pay higher rates for car insurance, which would not apply if you used your friend’s car with her car insurance policy at normal rates. It doesn’t make sense for a high risk driver to be using a low risk driver’s policy.
Another thing is that the SR22 car insurance is required to make sure that you have insurance coverage. The Texas department of public safety cannot track whichever friend’s car you might be driving, and cannot require that friend or relative to file any kind of SR22 form since you are driving their car. Therefore, if you want to have your license, then the responsibility lays on you, car or no car.

Texas SR22 Auto Insurance Removal From Your Record?
Reader question:
How do I remove my Texas SR22 auto insurance filing from my record?
Emily
Glad you asked.
Texas SR22 auto insurance is something that you have to file with whatever car insurance company that you are with for the three or five, or however many years you ended up with, that you are required by the state to show proof of auto insurance for your car. If you fail to file it during that period of time, or your car insurance policy gets cancelled or it doesn’t get renewed, then until you can get your SR22 filing for car insurance back, your license will be suspended. This is a hassle, especially since in most cases you are required to pay a reinstatement fee. All in all, the removal of your SR22 car insurance should be taken seriously and should not be something that you do until the required time period has ended, or you decide that you will not be driving until it does.
Now, when you remove the SR22 form from your insurance policy, your car insurance company has to file another form, which is called the SR26. The SR26 gets filed whether your period is over or not, but if you want to continue having insurance with a company and also want to have an SR26 filed, then you have to show them some kind of proof that you are no longer required to have it. If the SR26 form is filed and you do still have to have Texas SR22 auto insurance, then your license gets suspended.

Arrested For DUI? Texas SR22 Form Requirements
Reader question:
I was arrested for DUI and now they tell me that I have to file a Texas SR22 form. Thing is, I don’t own a car. Do I still have to get the SR22?
Jack
You definitely do.
Texas SR22 auto insurance is like all other types of insurance in that anytime someone who is required to have it is driving, they need to be insured it. When you don’t have to have SR22 car insurance, normally you can get by driving without your own insurance policy if you don’t own a car if you stick to driving the cars of friends who already have their own insurance policy for the vehicle. This works because a car insurance policy already covers most people who would drive that vehicle, be they friends of the owner or family members.
The difference between a regular insurance policy and an SR22 insurance policy in this case is that, unlike regular auto insurance, which is connected to the vehicle, the SR22 insurance is connected to you. You, as the person who was arrested for driving under the influence, have to have an SR22 car insurance policy, even if by some magical coincidence the car you are driving is owned by someone who also has a Texas SR22 auto insurance policy.
In order to get SR22 auto insurance while you do not have a car, you have to get an SR22 form filed for a non owner’s liability insurance policy. The non owner’s insurance policy is unfortunately lacking in optional coverage, which is disheartening for the driver that has to use one, but it is necessary if you do not have a vehicle registered under your own name. This SR22 non owner’s insurance policy covers only the damage you cause, the liability required by state. This includes things such as property damage and injury caused to the other driver and their property. Unfortunately, you can not add additional coverages such as collision and comprehensive, so the car that you’re driving isn’t protected unless the owner has it insured.
