Auto Insurance With An SR22 in Texas

Reader’s Question:

What is the purpose of having auto insurance with an SR22 here in Texas? I don’t think I have to get SR22 but I’m just curious how come many people have to get it.

Raul

Abilene, TX

Insurance with an SR22 is needed by a lot of motorists considered as high risk to insurance companies. SR22 is a form filed by the insurance company to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) that proves that the person has the proper auto insurance coverage. Insurance with an SR22 is usually required of drivers who have been convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). SR22 filing serves as an assurance to the DPS that the motorist carries insurance required by the state. In case the insurance with SR22 ends or laps coverage, the insurer has to notify the DPS right away. As soon as this happens, DPS will suspend the driving privileges of the motorist as well as his/her driver’s license.

In Texas, insurance with SR22 is required for two to three years after the driver’s license has been reinstated. This information still has to be checked with the DPS to be sure about the particular SR22 insurance requirements. This is usually sent through mail in an official letter once the driver’s license has been reinstated.

To obtain insurance with an SR22, the driver has to shop with an expert insurance broker who could explain the policies available for insurance with an SR22. It is still necessary that anyone who needs insurance with an SR22 has to compare all the options available and pick the best one.

Cheap SR22 Car Insurance For Students

Reader question:

I’m a student and I got convicted for a DUI. Now that I have my license back, I’m supposed to file Texas SR-22 car insurance for two years. I hear it’s really expensive. Is there any way that I can get it to be cheaper?

George

Thank you for your question, George.

When you’re young, car insurance costs are often very high, especially while you are a college student and it is harder than usual to afford the Texas SR-22 car insurance rates. These high premiums might have you eating ramen more often than usual if you don’t step up and do everything that you can to get them to be lower. Lucky for you, being in Texas you only have to file SR-22 car insurance for two years, whereas in most places it’s between three and five years.

Over the next two years, though, I would pay close attention to my grades if I were you. The reason I say this is because the greatest car insurance discount you can get as a student is the good student discount, which most companies offer and which awards students who have a B average or above or a 3.5 GPA or above with a car insurance discount. I applied this to my own car insurance premium and receive fifteen percent off. When you are paying so much for Texas Sr-22 car insurance, such a discount can save a lot.

Texas SR22 Auto Insurance Removal From Your Record?

Reader question:

How do I remove my Texas SR22 auto insurance filing from my record?

Emily

Glad you asked.

Texas SR22 auto insurance is something that you have to file with whatever car insurance company that you are with for the three or five, or however many years you ended up with, that you are required by the state to show proof of auto insurance for your car. If you fail to file it during that period of time, or your car insurance policy gets cancelled or it doesn’t get renewed, then until you can get your SR22 filing for car insurance back, your license will be suspended. This is a hassle, especially since in most cases you are required to pay a reinstatement fee. All in all, the removal of your SR22 car insurance should be taken seriously and should not be something that you do until the required time period has ended, or you decide that you will not be driving until it does.

Now, when you remove the SR22 form from your insurance policy, your car insurance company has to file another form, which is called the SR26. The SR26 gets filed whether your period is over or not, but if you want to continue having insurance with a company and also want to have an SR26 filed, then you have to show them some kind of proof that you are no longer required to have it. If the SR26 form is filed and you do still have to have Texas SR22 auto insurance, then your license gets suspended.

Arrested For DUI? Texas SR22 Form Requirements

Reader question:

I was arrested for DUI and now they tell me that I have to file a Texas SR22 form. Thing is, I don’t own a car. Do I still have to get the SR22?

Jack

You definitely do.

Texas SR22 auto insurance is like all other types of insurance in that anytime someone who is required to have it is driving, they need to be insured it. When you don’t have to have SR22 car insurance, normally you can get by driving without your own insurance policy if you don’t own a car if you stick to driving the cars of friends who already have their own insurance policy for the vehicle. This works because a car insurance policy already covers most people who would drive that vehicle, be they friends of the owner or family members.

The difference between a regular insurance policy and an SR22 insurance policy in this case is that, unlike regular auto insurance, which is connected to the vehicle, the SR22 insurance is connected to you. You, as the person who was arrested for driving under the influence, have to have an SR22 car insurance policy, even if by some magical coincidence the car you are driving is owned by someone who also has a Texas SR22 auto insurance policy.

In order to get SR22 auto insurance while you do not have a car, you have to get an SR22 form filed for a non owner’s liability insurance policy. The non owner’s insurance policy is unfortunately lacking in optional coverage, which is disheartening for the driver that has to use one, but it is necessary if you do not have a vehicle registered under your own name. This SR22 non owner’s insurance policy covers only the damage you cause, the liability required by state. This includes things such as property damage and injury caused to the other driver and their property. Unfortunately, you can not add additional coverages such as collision and comprehensive, so the car that you’re driving isn’t protected unless the owner has it insured.
