Reader’s Question:

Hi, I am scheduled to give a talk to some employees here in Wichita Falls, Texas about what to do in case of a road emergency. I am not that knowledgeable in automotive insurance basics yet. I’d like to leave a good impression with the bosses. So, what’s a good step-by-step approach in case of road accidents?

Hey there, Phil. I used to manage a team of people who drove around all of the time for sales calls. I guess my advice will still be valid in Wichita Falls, Texas. Aside from the step-by-step approach, you can also squeeze in your talk some of the basic coverage your automotive insurance has for your company vehicles. We wouldn’t want panicky ignorant employees on the road, right? It’s nice if you have liability coverage there in your company and some personal injury coverage for your employees. I am sure they will appreciate the fact they are being given protection by their employers. With these types of coverage, damages can easily be addressed by your company.

Here comes my step-by-step. First is, of course, the very basic “stay calm” and check for injuries or property damage. Second, wait for the police or highway patrol and file the report. This stage is quite important since it affects how the insurance company will approach your accident. In my book, there are fewer errors with less talk. So, better tell the employees to stick to the facts. The facts include: license plates, getting all the names straight, etc. Third, if there’s someone who handles accidents for your company, give him or her, a call. If none is available, better be sure that your people know who to get in touch with in the auto-insurance company. I think there’s usually a hotline for these cases. Good luck with the presentation, Phil.
